New on The Show

Polly Barrett

“Hasn’t Met You” – “It’s a lovely album, on the Folk spectrum, I thought you’d probably like it, I certainly did” - Marie Crichton BBC Radio Shropshire

Cork singer-songwriter

Following the release of her debut album Mr Bookshop in 2012, Polly was acclaimed as the new darling of folk-pop with her clever songwriting and beautiful vocal delivery, captivating critics and audiences alike.
Since then Polly has toured Ireland and the UK extensively, sharing bills with artists such as Agnes Obel, KT Tunstall and Cara Luft.

Bio
Polly Barrett was born in Kinsale, Ireland in 1984. She later moved to Crosshaven with her mother, attending an all-girl catholic primary school run by nuns, though being the atheist daughter of an unmarried English woman, this was not ideal. While learning Irish dance and to play the recorder she excelled at neither, but it was during a summer holiday with a friend that Polly's musical flare was first noted. A relative of the friend was a piano teacher and advised Polly to take lessons noting that Polly’s tinkering on the piano seemed more melodic than random. This led to six years of piano lessons but she didn't excel at that either.

Polly's English teacher at Ashton Comprehensive, Cork was a great inspiration and encouraged her in creative writing and poetry, quickly leading to a love affair with songwriting which Polly channelled through a guitar she received as a gift before leaving for college in England where she began listening to and taking inspiration from artists such as Joni Mitchell, Kate Rusby, John Martyn, Bob Dylan, Nanci Griffith and Chris Wood.
Polly trained at Rose Bruford College in Sidcup, Kent for three years before graduating with a BA (Hons) in Actor-musicianship and numerous songs were written during this period with Polly performing many at open mics in the London area.

After graduating, Polly remained in London for a time attending various auditions and busking along the South Bank of the Thames to make a living. She soon tired of the hustle and bustle though and longed to return to Ireland to further her career. Shortly after returning, she landed the lead role in Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre's pantomime, Beauty & The Beast. This ran for 2 months and was Polly's first stage appearance. After that she went back to busking on the streets of Cork and gigging, while also appearing in various television commercials and other stage shows.

Polly’s continued busking led to various musical connections and in 2010, Polly began recording her debut album, Mr. Bookshop, which was released in November 2011. The album was supported by a launch gig at The Crane Lane Theatre in Cork, followed by further dates in the UK and Ireland, including shows with Roddy Woomble, Agnes Obel, Julie Felix and Cara Luft. It was while on tour with Cara that Polly met Scott Poley, a producer and multi-instrumentalist from Liverpool, as a result of which she travelled to Liverpool in November 2013 and recorded her second album, Probably Me with Scott in seven days at Waterside Studios, with Scott not only co-producing the album, but also playing guitar, mandolin, dobro, keyboards, drums and percussion.

Polly Barrett’s second album PROBABLY ME is the follow-up to her acclaimed 2012 debut ‘Mr. Bookshop’, which was is due for UK release on Sept 22, 2014. Read this Fatea Album review (published by Kath Reade) CD Cover ART Facebook
Probably Me is already receiving huge support from the BBC and other media. The interesting collection of songs includes a fantasy retelling of the story of Jack the Ripper only in Polly’s tale, the killer is stopped by vigilante action. Iain Anderson on BBC Radio Scotland played Polly's version of 'Anachie Gordon' on his show.

Karyn Rochelle

“As Long As You’re My Man” -  Just the kind of album that I love to listen to, I think she’s amazing, I love this ladies voice, to listen to something that beautiful is music to my ears” ” - Marie Crichton BBC Radio Shropshire

Karyn Suzanne Rochelle

Hometown: Wilmington, NC
Record label: TBA
Influences: Trisha Yearwood, The Judds, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Suzy Bogguss, Kim Richey & Matraca Berg
Current Location: Nasvhille, TN

Growing up she listened to a wide variety of music and loved country music because it was just always present in her home.
Her mother sang country music and often invited her to sing songs with her in her band such as songs by The Judds.
Karyn said she can hear their influence in some of her songs.
In her pre-teen years, she was really into Debbie Gibson because she was 15 and she wrote all of her own songs (a la today’s Taylor Swift).
Her brother, Chris was also musically inclined: “I’m a little bit country and he’s a lot rock n’ roll. I gravitated more to piano and then later guitar” she shared.
In high school she was drawn to artists such as Suzy Bogguss, Trisha Yearwood, Patty Loveless, Pam Tillis and Mary Chapin Carpenter: “It was a magical time in country music when there were so many versatile artists to discover. Albums were like storybooks that took you on a journey. I will never buy into this whole theory about marketing music to age groups because at 15 I had records ranging from young pop artists to women who were more mature than me in years and loved them all equally”.
At age 18 she discovered, by accident, the record that would change her life. At the time she was working part-time as a DJ for a country line dance club and teaching line dance lessons in Myrtle Beach, SC when she discovered a promo CD by a then new artist out of Nashville by the name of Matraca Berg. Karyn took the CD home and played it hundreds of times; “Matraca has a magic way of pulling you into her world when you listen to her. This record alone inspired me to write so many songs and helped me to trust myself to be more vulnerable in my writing”.

Karyn Rochelle had a choice. Straight ahead, college loomed - a shaded path of libraries and stability. To her left, the crooked path to Music City beckoned. The Wilmington, North Carolina, native made a choice: she packed her bags and headed west, with only nineteen years under her belt. It was Rochelle's mature voice that first snagged the attention of Nashville's songwriting community. Pure, with impressive range, it effortlessly conjures up a tear or a hope.
Prior to becoming a songwriter, Rochelle was a very saught after demo singer.
Karyn lent her voice to literally hundreds of demos, including Mark D. Sanders' "I Hope You Dance" - a crossover hit for Lee Ann Womack - and Martina McBride's "There You Are," co-written by award-winning songwriters Bob DiPiero, Ed Hill and Mark Sanders.

(American Songwriter; July 2012) Did singing demos that became cuts, like “I Hope You Dance,” help her with own writing?
Yes, of course. I fell into demo singing on the recommendation of a fellow co-writer. Word of mouth brought me more work and before I knew it I was singing songs by some of our industry’s most incredible songwriters. I don’t think I ever thought of it as a way to advance my career. I just knew these songs were great and there was nothing more I loved to do than sing. Being in the studio is where I am most comfortable. To me, nothing touches the creative energy of recording and hearing a song come to life. I just loved it and I believe that must have translated. When these writers began to ask me to get together for co-writes I was honored and a bit nervous because they’d never really heard anything I’d written on my own. Looking back on my demo years, I believe that time was pivotal because not only did these writers help me learn the craft of songwriting better, but they also helped me see the value in what I brought on my own. The more I began to trust that, the more I grew as a writer.

Karyn was another Nashville hopeful in search of a recording career who, unlike most who don’t get that break, ended up becoming a highly successful songwriter. Rochelle, who worked as a demo singer and as a background vocalist with Martina McBride while she honed her writing chops and built a catalog, found success by penning hits for such country acts as Trisha Yearwood, LeAnn Rimes, Ronnie Milsap and Big Machine artist Sunny Sweeney, and even had a hit R&B single by Kenny G with Chante Moore (“One More Time”).

Rochelle gained a staff writer deal with Nashville’s Big Yellow Dog Music.

In December 2010 Nashville braced itself for the return of Garth Brooks the superstar entertainer, along with his wife, Trisha Yearwood, and songwriter Karyn geared up to play nine sold-out shows at Music City's Bridgestone Arena to benefit the ongoing flood-relief effort in Middle Tennessee when the community rallied in support of the historic May floods.

In 2014 Karyn was blessed with opportunity to appear and sing with Garth Brooks at various
sold out shows and TV appearances. Rochelle opened up for Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood on their new world tour in Chicago and was asked to sing backup for Garth and Trisha on the tour.
She spent time in the studio, completing a new album with producers Garth Brooks and Mark Miller.
The album was recorded at Prime Cut Studio in Nashville, TN with Karyn's friend and co-producer, Daniel Dennis.  The collection of songs on the album are very dear to her heart with talented friends, Erick Hedrick, Steve Bryant, Wanda Vick and Nathan Dugger contributing their time and gifts to the projectl. Live Review Vince Gill, Karyn Rochelle prove it all begins with a song...and a great vocal (Mercy Lounge, Nashville, April 1, 2008) She began with her love of traditional country, dedicating the sobering "Church on Sunday Now," to her mother, who was in the audience. Rochelle proved she has deftness with poetic lyrics and a powerhouse vocal with a couple of songs recorded by Trisha Yearwood, the wistful sing-along "Cowboys Are My Weakness" and Yearwood's hit ballad, "Georgia Rain." Rochelle's vocals were a close match for Pickler's on her song "I Wonder," which brought her biggest applause of the night. "Hearing someone like you gives me hope," exclaimed Gill, who sat onstage nearby, listening to each song with obvious admiration for Rochelle's talent.
